“民以食為天”，學校以糧立校。1956年，五省市聯動籌辦南京糧食學校，開啟了學校辦學曆史。

1981年，學校更名為南京糧食經濟學院，開啟本科教學。

1993年，去掉“糧食”二字，更名為南京經濟學院，學校轉以财經為主要辦學方向。

1999年，南京物資學校并入南京經濟學院。

"Bread is the stall of life". The school was built on the basis of the food science. With the cooperation among the five provincial-level regions (including Shanghai Municipality) in East China, in 1956, five provinces and municipalities jointly organized to set up the Nanjing Grain School, which opened the history of the school.

In 1981, the school changed its name to Nanjing Institute of Grain Economics and started the undergraduate teaching.

In 1993, the word "Grain" was removed and the school name was changed to Nanjing Institute of Economics. The University turned to put finance and economics as its main direction.

In 1999, Nanjing Material College was merged into Nanjing Institute of Economics.

In 2000, Nanjing Institute of Economics, Jiangsu College of Finance and Economics, and Jiangsu Economic Management Cadre College were merged to make preparations for the setting up of Nanjing University of Finance and Economics.

In 2003, Nanjing University of Finance and Economics was formally established.

Located in the Gulou District of Nanjing, the Fujian Road Campus is rich in humanities and prosperous in business; Located in the rapidly developing and beautiful Xianlin University Town in Nanjing, Xianlin Campus is full of vitality; Located in Qiaotou Town, Zhenjiang city, Qiaotou Campus is endowed with beautiful landscapes and elegant environment, which makes it a good place to study. Xianlin Campus is the main campus of the University.
